Three ways to transition to the final approach course
ATC radar vectors, a published course reversal (PT or HILPT), or a published feeder route / TAA arrival.
Minimum distance ATC must vector you to intercept final
At least 2 NM outside the final approach fix (or precision FAF), at an altitude at or above glideslope/glidepath intercept altitude.
Maximum intercept angle for a vector to final
No greater than 30° — reduced to about 20° when within 2 NM of the FAF or on certain RNAV approaches.
What does 'maintain 2,000 until established on the localizer' mean?
You may not descend to a lower published altitude until you are established on a published segment of the approach.
You're being vectored across the localizer with no approach clearance — what do you do?
Do not turn onto final. Maintain heading and query ATC to confirm the approach clearance.
What is the barbed arrow on a plan view?
A procedure turn (PT) — a course reversal with a charted remain-within distance and outbound/inbound courses.
Is the 45/180 procedure turn mandatory?
No. The PT is a maneuvering area; a teardrop, 80/260, or racetrack is fine if you stay on the depicted side, within the distance limit, and at or above the PT altitude.
How is a HILPT flown?
As a charted hold: standard entry (direct, parallel, teardrop), one-minute or charted-distance legs, then track inbound — only one circuit is required.
List when a course reversal is NOT flown
When receiving radar vectors to final, when cleared for a 'straight-in' approach, or when arriving on a NoPT route/segment (e.g., a TAA straight-in area).
What terrain awareness should you keep while on vectors?
Compare assigned altitude to the MSA circle and moving-map terrain; controllers provide minimum vectoring altitudes, but query any vector toward rising ground.
